I was so honored to be recently chosen and awarded the 2016 Woman with Vision Woman of the Year Award by Single Moms Planet! Please give Single Moms Planet a look, it is a fantastic national foundation that empowers single mothers across the country through mentorship, training, career building, and family involvement opportunities, while highlighting single mothers whose positive triumphs exemplify achievement through adversity. Oh Malibu... Why'd I Ever Leave You

Yesterday was such an amazingly beautiful day, even for southern California standards. In Malibu, about 75 degrees and not a cloud in site. So we went out to the beach and enjoyed the sand in between our toes and the wind in our hair. We even ran into a friend. Charlie has been out surfing several times over the years, as I've posted in the past. Charlie's surfing buddy, Steve, was there, having spent the whole morning surfing, and then going back out with his camera to capture some of his stunning surf-photography. His work is really gorgeous, I am totally in awe of his photography, I can't wait to see what he captured yesterday! But really, he's just such a super cool guy for being a nice friend to Charlie. Charlie has instinct for good people, and he immediately spotted his friend!

The Getty... with an iPhone

When asked, "What's the best camera?" one of my favorite photographers always answers, "It's the one that's with you!" That is so true! And these days, who doesn't carry a smart phone?! I have to say, some of my biggest inspiration comes from Instagram and places where I can take a look at what others see. It has actually taught me alot about composition, coloring, capturing light. The picture is not about the incredibly expensive camera body or fancy lens, it's about the vision that went into it.

An Educational Dinner at the Mayor's with Mind Research

I was lucky to attend such an interesting informative dinner on Monday night with Mayor Villaraigosa, at his Residence, the Getty House, with a truly exceptional group: Monica Garcia of LAUSD, the Ambassador to Uruguay, Frank Baxter, Dr. James Rosser, president of CSULA, Gale Banks, Apple of the Black Eyed Peas, and Dr. Matthew Peterson, Nigel Nisbet & Chiara Tellini of Mind Research, discussing Public School Education and LAUSD. The Mayor has done a great job with inner-city and South LA schools in LAUSD. I have to say, I am impressed. Apple came to the US as a young kid from the Philippines. He is almost blind and was having trouble in school. Once in the US, he was able to have his sight problem diagnosed and was then able to find a way to learn. Dr. Matthew Peterson, the founder of Mind Research, was himself dyslexic, and in fifth grade still could not read. Now, he has a PhD in neuro-science and systems engineering and additional degrees in Mandarin language and literature. Oh, and he runs this extremely successful software company. Nigel Nisbet is a rock star turned mathematician and gamer which makes him a perfect player in Mind Research. What an amazing group to discuss the future of public school education. © KRISTINA BANT JENKINS_2013_Collage-2-8-pics-Mayor-27s © KRISTINA BANT JENKINS_2013_Collage-3-9-pics-Mayor-27s © KRISTINA BANT JENKINS_2013_Mayor Villaraigosa's DinnerKBJ-_3638 And I couldn't help but take a few of the residence and grounds. Art Shay a Retrospective at drkroom

Last weekend, I got a couple friends to go down to Chinatown with me for a reception honoring Art Shay, the legendary photojournalist. It was amazing to see rooms filled with his outstanding and memorable work. It felt like something between walking through the MOCA and sifting through Life magazines. We decided to make an evening out of it: we started at seVen grand, downtown, to have one of their famous whiskeys. Then, on to Chinatown, to the drkrm gallery, and of course ended with an authentic Chinese dinner down the street.

"Art Shay's photography shakes you up, sets you down gently, pats you on the head and then kicks you in the ass." Roger Ebert "Art Shay's one of the best photo-journalists I know. I've been a fan of his work since before I launched Playboy." Hugh Hefner

Enjoying a conversation with Shay.
A member of the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) since 1957, Art Shay’s photography career spans nearly seven decades. He has published over 30,000 photographs, which include the likes of kings, queens, presidents, athletes and celebrities as well as the common man. He has covered subjects such as John F. Kennedy's 1960 presidential campaign, the fights of Muhammad Ali, Hugh Hefner's infamous bedroom office, and the Chicago police clubbing demonstrators at the 1968 Democratic Convention. Mr. Shay once told a reporter, of all his subjects, President Kennedy was his favorite, saying, “You can’t take a bad picture of that guy.” His pictures of Marlon Brando, Nelson Algren, Judy Garland, Diana Ross and hundreds of other luminaries are not the usual portraits; they are people off-guard, memorable for their humanity rather than their celebrity.
Unlike other photographers of his time, Art Shay has a way with words and his writing is sharp, vivid and evocotive, reflecting a cultivated intellect. Among Mr. Shay's various publications are: Nelson Algren's Chicago (University of Illinois, 1988), Album for an Age (Ivan R. Dee, 2000), Animals (University of Illinois, 2002) and Couples (University of Illinois, 2003). He continues to write a weekly blog entry, “From the Vault of Art Shay” for Chicagoist. Many of his images are in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., the Art Institute of Chicago and numerous other museum collections. His photograph of Russian Premier Nikita Khrushchev on an Iowa farm won Life magazine’s “Picture of the Year” in 1959. At 90 years of age, Art Shay remains an active photographer. He recently completed a series of images for Smashing Pumpkins lead singer, Billy Corgan (who had become close friends with Mr. Shay’s late wife, Florence). Corgan said of Mr. Shay’s photography, “He has the gift of capturing that ‘decisive moment’ that separates the legends from the rest of us punters who press buttons and call ourselves photographers. Art’s eye extends to those overlooked aspects of the human condition that have informed his opinions of the world.”
What did Mr. Shay have to say when we sat down to talk? I asked, to another photographer, what piece of wisdom could he share with me? His reply: "Well, taking pictures is no big riddle!" Haha, gotta love it!
drkrm is an exhibition space dedicated to the display of popular cultural images, fine art photography, documentary and photo journalism, cutting edge and alternative photographic processes. drkrm is located in the historic Chung King Road of contemporary art galleries in Downtown L.A.'s Chinatown. The Art Shay exhibition will be open until April 6, 2013. Go online to find out more.

Get to the Getty

It's another gorgeous day in LA... which is so needed for us LA-ers. It seems I just wrote that it was getting nice out again, and, sure enough, the next day, cold and gloomy again. Ugh, enough already!! Well, it is nice today, so get out! And if you have a chance, get to the Getty. It's spectacular! It's one of our favorite spots. There are family days, garden tours, architecture tours, not to mention, the exhibits. HDRtist HDR Rendering - http://www.ohanaware.com/hdrtist/ DSC_39630417-wm-27d

It's Goooorgeous Weather in LA... Hallelujah!!!

IMG_0429So, for Angelenos, it's been a coooold winter! You've seen it around town, big puffy winter jackets, scarves, hats on the non-grunge crowd, and yes... I even wore mittens a few times! And one evening, it even got down to 34! Yikes! (Ahem, see proof, for all you who mock us complaining when it hits below 60!) So, you can imagine how thrilled we are to have some sunny warm gorgeous February LA weather back! Hallelujah! Why not head out to the beach, maybe it's not bikini-weather yet, but now we can actually imagine what that might feel like again. IMG_8622-wm KBJ-2332 IMG_8611-wm IMG_8625-wm

As for me, I worked an awesome photo shoot yesterday, some super cool fashion that I can't wait to show you guys. So this is where I'll be sitting with my laptop, my balcony, with Lily at my feet and my little guy playing somewhere beside me. The perfect Sunday in my opinion. Happy Sunday, everyone!

A little more Americana from the Ranch

I've never been short-winded, so you can imagine how I am with a camera!  Here are a few more shots of the Ranch. These are not using HDR, I decided to give a few of these a look of what I think they may have looked like if they were taken in the 1800's.
