We enjoyed a lovely afternoon with high tea at the Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills on Mother’s Day weekend. Yesterday was such an amazingly beautiful day, even for southern California standards. In Malibu, about 75 degrees and not a cloud in site. So we went out to the beach and enjoyed the sand in between our toes and the wind in our hair. We even ran into a friend. Charlie has been out surfing several times over the years, as I've posted in the past. Charlie's surfing buddy, Steve, was there, having spent the whole morning surfing, and then going back out with his camera to capture some of his stunning surf-photography. His work is really gorgeous, I am totally in awe of his photography, I can't wait to see what he captured yesterday! But really, he's just such a super cool guy for being a nice friend to Charlie. Charlie has instinct for good people, and he immediately spotted his friend!

When asked, "What's the best camera?" one of my favorite photographers always answers, "It's the one that's with you!" That is so true! And these days, who doesn't carry a smart phone?! I have to say, some of my biggest inspiration comes from Instagram and places where I can take a look at what others see. It has actually taught me alot about composition, coloring, capturing light. The picture is not about the incredibly expensive camera body or fancy lens, it's about the vision that went into it.

I was lucky to attend such an interesting informative dinner on Monday night with Mayor Villaraigosa, at his Residence, the Getty House, with a truly exceptional group: Monica Garcia of LAUSD, the Ambassador to Uruguay, Frank Baxter, Dr. James Rosser, president of CSULA, Gale Banks, Apple of the Black Eyed Peas, and Dr. Matthew Peterson, Nigel Nisbet & Chiara Tellini of Mind Research, discussing Public School Education and LAUSD. The Mayor has done a great job with inner-city and South LA schools in LAUSD. I have to say, I am impressed. Apple came to the US as a young kid from the Philippines. He is almost blind and was having trouble in school. Once in the US, he was able to have his sight problem diagnosed and was then able to find a way to learn. Dr. Matthew Peterson, the founder of Mind Research, was himself dyslexic, and in fifth grade still could not read. Now, he has a PhD in neuro-science and systems engineering and additional degrees in Mandarin language and literature. Oh, and he runs this extremely successful software company. Nigel Nisbet is a rock star turned mathematician and gamer which makes him a perfect player in Mind Research. What an amazing group to discuss the future of public school education. And I couldn't help but take a few of the residence and grounds. It is gorgeous.

Last weekend, I got a couple friends to go down to Chinatown with me for a reception honoring Art Shay, the legendary photojournalist. It was amazing to see rooms filled with his outstanding and memorable work. It felt like something between walking through the MOCA and sifting through Life magazines. We decided to make an evening out of it: we started at seVen grand, downtown, to have one of their famous whiskeys. Then, on to Chinatown, to the drkrm gallery, and of course ended with an authentic Chinese dinner down the street.

It's another gorgeous day in LA... which is so needed for us LA-ers. It seems I just wrote that it was getting nice out again, and, sure enough, the next day, cold and gloomy again. Ugh, enough already!! Well, it is nice today, so get out! And if you have a chance, get to the Getty. It's spectacular! It's one of our favorite spots. There are family days, garden tours, architecture tours, not to mention, the exhibits.

So, for Angelenos, it's been a coooold winter! You've seen it around town, big puffy winter jackets, scarves, hats on the non-grunge crowd, and yes... I even wore mittens a few times! And one evening, it even got down to 34! Yikes! (Ahem, see proof, for all you who mock us complaining when it hits below 60!) So, you can imagine how thrilled we are to have some sunny warm gorgeous February LA weather back! Hallelujah! Why not head out to the beach, maybe it's not bikini-weather yet, but now we can actually imagine what that might feel like again.

 As for me, I worked an awesome photo shoot yesterday, some super cool fashion that I can't wait to show you guys. So this is where I'll be sitting with my laptop, my balcony, with Lily at my feet and my little guy playing somewhere beside me. The perfect Sunday in my opinion. Happy Sunday, everyone!
